Sample Phonics Sequence

Phonics curriculum packages typically come with a scope and sequence of skills; each publisher/writer has a slightly different take on the order, and often different terms for the same concept can be found based on the proprietor. The sequence above is a simplified version of a phonics sequence, meant to give educators who are new to phonics a general idea of what skills should be taught and in what order.

Each skill shown above can be shown in more detail and the exact teaching methods of each are often debated. For example, in the first box, Letters, many educators begin by teaching the uppercase letters (because they are easier for young children to write), then the lower case letters, and then the letter sounds. Other educators teach the lowercase letters first because they are more frequently seen in writing. Still others insist it is best to teach letter sounds simultaneously with letter names. These discussions are valid, but should not take away from the main goal – teaching each of the skills needed to become excellent decoders.
