Why structured literacy?

For decades, NAEP scores have shown that too many of our students are not succeeding in reading. Research supports the use of structured literacy practices within literacy classrooms. Some educators worry this approach reverts to drill-and-kill, boring phonics lessons, but that is not the case. Abbey Payeur is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. She holds an M.A. in Literacy Education, a K-12 Reading license, and a K-8 Elementary Teaching License.
